The first fact we learned about Gypsum in our school days is that it is a mineral found in the layers accumulated beneath the saltwater after thousands of years. The mineral gets separated when the water evaporates. Gypsum also has a chemical name which is calcium sulfate dehydrate since it is made up of calcium sulfate and water. By dehydrating this gypsum mineral what we get is gypsum plaster . Plaster of Paris is something which is more commonly heard of, during the whitewash in our homes. It is basically made from gypsum. Gypsum is one of the oldest building materials as it’s been found in the pyramids of Egypt in around 3000 BC, whose construction is still a mystery.
